Hearing Ability

Audiometric testing is used to evaluate a worker’s hearing ability by measuring hearing thresholds across a range of sound frequencies. Regular testing can help identify early changes in hearing and detect signs of noise-induced hearing loss before they become more significant. This is particularly important for employees who work in environments where they are routinely exposed to elevated workplace noise.

Testing

In Alberta, audiometric testing is required for workers who are regularly exposed to workplace noise levels that meet or exceed established occupational exposure limits, generally within the 82–85 dBA range over a work shift. Testing provides a consistent record of a worker’s hearing over time, allowing changes in hearing to be identified and helping employers evaluate the effectiveness of workplace noise-control and hearing-protection measures.

Schedule

Baseline testing should be conducted as soon as practicable and within six months of employment or initial noise exposure, with employees required to have at least 14 hours away from loud noise before testing. The first periodic test should take place 12 months after the baseline test, followed by testing every two years thereafter, or annually when noise exposure exceeds 105 dB.
